Description

This dataset is a compilation of field observations of mammals during rapid biological inventories conducted by the Field Museum and in collaboration with indigenous and campesino people, NGOs, museums and universities, and government agencies. These data serve as a major resource for biodiversity and geographic distribution patterns. The collection of field observations holds unique ecological and conservation significance because biological inventories are conducted in concurrence with social inventories in remote, unknown areas, and the dataset includes observations of numerous rare species. The dataset is focused in the Andes-Amazon region.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 1,337 records.

1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

Title Rapid Inventories 1999 - present
Design Description Rapid inventories are expert surveys of remote forests. These inventories do not attempt to produce an exhaustive list of species or higher taxa. Rather, the surveys 1) identify the important biological communities in the site or region of interest, and 2) determine whether these communities are of outstanding quality and significance in a regional or global context.
